BEAR,
WOLF, BEAVER & KILLER WHALE BOX BY
SARAH ROBERTSON
This box, by Sarah
Robertson, is made from a single
piece of red cedar. Precise lines were first cut into the wood, a technique
called kerfing, and then the box was steamed and bent along the lines.
Bear is one of the most prevalent figures in crest and shamanic art, as
well as in myths. It is considered to be a close relation of humankind,
perhaps because of physical characteristics such as size appearance, and
expression, and behaviors such as standing on tow hind legs, gathering
plants and berries, fishing and nurturing young.
Wolf, viewed by some nations as a transformer, is a popular image within
crest and shamanic art. It is respected for its strength, agility, intelligence
and capacity for devotion.
Beaver is a popular image within Northwest Coast art and appears as a
crest image in many regions. Beaver is respected for its industrious nature
and is considered to be very wise.
Killer Whales are thought to inhabit deep underwater villages, where they
are free to remove their whale coverings and live as humans. They are
respected for their strength and dignity and are associated with wealth.
