WILD WOMAN MASK BY ALFRED ROBERTSON

This mask, by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Alfred Robertson, has been carved from traditional red cedar. The carving is extremely deep (particularly around the eyes and mouth ) and the mask has been adorned with horse hair. Alfred has signed the back of the piece.

Dzunuk’wa (pronounced June-o-Kwa) is a giant, hairy, bearded, black-bodied, big-breasted female ogress. Dzunuk’wa loves to eat human children; they are her favorite food. A child foolish enough to wonder away from his/her parents will likely fall victim to her.

Dzunuk’wa is identifiable by large round eyes, black color, facial hair, up-thrust hands, and thick red lips puckered in such a way that it appears she is making her characteristic “huuu huuu huuu” cry.
