SALMON RATTLE BY ALFRED ROBERTSON

This rattle, by Alfred Robertson, is carved from red cedar. The piece is fully functional and makes a wonderful "whooshing" noise when shaken. A stain has been applied that accentuates the natural grain of the wood and gives the piece a nice aged look.

Salmon is an extremely important resource to Northwest Coast peoples and is a powerful symbol of regeneration, self-sacrifice, and perseverance.
Failure to observe certain rituals, such as not listening to the wisdom of the elders, could ultimately result in Salmon shortages. Oral traditions tell of individuals that were taken by the Salmon, eventually returning with secret knowledge, enabling them to become shaman.

They are commonly associated with twins, so are often carved in pairs. Any twin could claim Salmon as a crest, regardless of lineage.

Salmon is easily recognizable by short fins, round eyes, downward turned mouth, and a large bifurcated tail.
