KILLER WHALE RATTLE BY ALFRED ROBERTSON

This rattle, by Alfred Robertson, is carved from red cedar. The piece is fully functional and makes a wonderful "whooshing" noise when shaken. A stain has been applied that accentuates the natural grain of the wood and gives the piece a nice aged look.

The image of Killer Whale is a frequent motif within the art of Northwest Coast peoples and many stories exist (varying from Nation to Nation) regarding these creatures. They are respected for their strength, dignity and are associated with wealth.

It was believe that a Killer Whale could drag a canoe, and it occupants, into the realm of their deep undersea villages where they would be transformed into these majestic creatures. If a Killer were to appear close to a village, it represented a drowned ancestor attempting to communicate with the people.

Killer Whale is identifiable by a large, blunt nose, a tooth-filled mouth, a blowhole, and a large dorsal fin.

Price: $315.00 Cdn.
