EAGLE AND RAVEN TALKING STICK BY ALFRED ROBERTSON

This piece, by Alfred Robertson, is carved from yellow cedar. The detail work is amazing and the symmetry is extremely precise.

Eagle is an extremely important being, appearing prominently within the art and oral traditions of Northwest Coast Peoples, and is respected for its intelligence, power, wisdom, and noble nature.

Eagle feathers are considered to be sacred. It is believed that they possess special healing powers, which can be harnessed by a shaman. They are also utilized in a variety of ceremonial and ritual contexts, such as honoring a respected guest.

Raven is a dynamic character and a prominent figure within the accounts of the aboriginal people of the Northwest Coast although his prominence does diminish from north to south. Despite the differing roles this creature plays within First Nation worldviews; Raven is admired universally for his intelligence, inquisitiveness and creativity and as a result appears more often within the works of indigenous artists than any other character of their oral traditions.

Along the northern regions of the coast, Eagle and Raven are thought to be close companions and serve as alter egos to one another. Although the trickster Raven is better known, largely due to the tales of his exploits, he and Eagle are technically equals.
