KINGFISHER MASK BY PATRICK AMOS

This mask, by Patrick Amos, is carved from red cedar and features traditonal cedar bark rope and hair. Two pieces of abalone have been inlayed, represented the Kingfishers eyes.

Kingfishers are majestic birds, which posses a remarkable crown of feathers. Upon spying a fish, while pirched on a tree branch, it dives down and spears its unsuspecting meal.

It is believed, by some First Nations, that Kingfisher was meant to be a water bird; however, since he lacks a bill and webbed feet he could not survive. The animals held a meeting and decided to make him a beak, similiar in shape to an awl, to act like a fishing spear. They attached it to his mouth and he has been the best gigger (spear fisher) since.

Kingfisher is a symbol of luck, patience, speed and agility. He is recognizable by a thin and pointed beak and large ploom.

Price: $575.00 Cdn.
