HUMMINGBIRD MASK BY PATRICK AMOS

This Mask, by Patrick Amos, is carved from red cedar and features copper eyes and traditional cedar bark hair.

Hummingbirds are tiny, very active, and extremely fast creatures that can be found along the Northwest Coast; however, they seldom appear within artworks. It is believed that they nest in the hair of Dzunuk’wa and fly around her as she walks through the forest. Dzunuk’wa is a guardian of forest creatures and a protector of Hummingbird.

Hummingbird is recognizable by a long narrow beak, prominent eyes, a small head and short wings. Hummingbird is occasionally portrayed in association with flower imagery.
