SISUITL MASK BY TIM ALFRED This mask, by Tim Alfred Tim Alfred, is carved from red cedar. The piece features; clean carving and deep lines, excellent symetry, knife finishing, traditional cedar bark hair and rope. Tim has signed the back of this mask. The Sisiutl, a fierce two-headed serpent, is a common Kwakwaka’wakw depiction and a symbol of duality and contradiction: capable of bestowing great power or death. It is a gifted transformer, able to turn into many things, including a self-propelled canoe. Many supernatural creatures rely on the Sisiutl to guard the doorways of their dwellings; consequently, it was occasionally painted above people’s house entrances for protection. Warrior’s often claimed Sisiutl as spirit guides, providing them with power and the gift of invulnerability, and wore headbands and belts bestowed with its image. Sisiutl is portrayed with two serpent creatures protruding from a central face. All three heads feature curled horn-like appendages, teeth with pronounced canines and large nostrils. The two snake-like figures display long necks and protruding tongues. Price: $850.00 Cdn. |
