This mask, by Tim Alfred, is carved from red cedar. The piece displays wonderful detail and has been adorned with authentic deer antler and traditonal cedar bark hair.

Shamans are well-respected and integral members of Northwest Coast societies, performing a variety of functions. A shaman, acting as a healer, mediator, or spiritual guide, obtains the title through inheritance or as a consequence of specific omens.

The Kwakwaka’wakw place shamans into three distinct categories based upon the the powers they possess. The most powerful shamans are capable of diagnosing and curing illnesses as well as causing harm onto others through the casting of spells. Other shamans only have the ability to diagnose and cure sickness. The least power shamans received their abilities as a result of being treated by another shaman; their abilities are simply of a residual nature.
